Appreciated Eggs

There is something Primal and beautiful about gathering chicken eggs.

The relationship between hen and human has existed for thousands of years.  A strange coexistence of providing food and shelter for a brood of birds in exchange for surplus eggs for eating.

Which came first, the gathering of eggs in the wild or hens sheltering near human settlements for protection/food?
